The Three Hundred and Twentieth...

Number Three Hundred and Twenty:

Home, Dinner, Pizza

Had an interview for the book with Liz Humes, host of the wonderful book show called Wordy Birds on WRIR 97.3. I think Beth Brown and I did a great job. Beth did well, of course, she has done this before, and while I have been interviewed for things like a t.v. segment for my job and bands, the book was a little different. I think I did all right though!

Picked up a pizza pie on the way home, in time for some Antiques Roadshow!

The Three Hundred and Tenth...

Number Three Hundred and Ten:
Splork, Dinner, Pizza

Last practice before the big reunion show Saturday night at Bogart's in the Fan for the WRIR CD Release party Fund Drive! DONATE TO WRIR by the way! I picked up a pizza, we had some beers, we rolled the set out a few times, had some laughs, then chatted with the Diamond Center as they came in to practice after us. Good times!

The Two Hundred and Ninety Ninth...

Number Two Hundred and Ninety Nine:

Home, Dinner, Pizza

Lisa and I were nearly complete slugs today, especially after yesterday's fun. I played a video pinball game, Lisa read, I did do some dishes, and I know Lisa did some other real chores. Just one of those days when you feel like being cooped up in the house and chilling. I totally goofed and at first did a video, so there it it. I like how completely nonchalant Lisa is in it. Here is the picture I meant to take:

The Two Hundred and Eighty Seventh...

Number Two Hundred and Eighty Seven:

Home, Dinner, Pizza, Leftovers

Grabbed a leftover slice of pizza on the way out the door to meet Noah Scalin and Beth Brown regarding the Richmond Macabre book. (By the way, available at the Barnes & Noble website for early order now!) We had limited screen prints made of the cover, so we numbered and Noah signed them this evening. We listened to some old awesome 78s on a Victrola. Awesome! Oh, I guess I haven't shown the cover of the book on this blog yet:

So great!

The Two Hundred and Eighty Sixth...

Number Two Hundred and Eighty Six:

Home, Dinner, Pizza

So yeah, the east coast of the United States had it's worst quake in the past century, 5.8 on the scale. I was in the office, just like I was for the 2003 quake, when it happened. Justin, our part timer, and I kind of looked at each other as the quake lasted at least 10 seconds. It was a little unsettling. Speaking of natural disasters, that made me want to come home and immediately cut the grass in preparation for this hurricane Irene that is suppose to hit us, maybe knocking power out, and bringing tons of rain --best get the grass done now. So if it happens and we're OUT of internet for a few days, I have a NO POST excuse!

The Two Hundred and Seventy Ninth...

Number Two Hundred and Seventy Nine:
Home, Dinner, Pizza

The Lundy-Ryans came over for pizza then we went to Bow-Tie to see a movie. First, we thought the joint would be less crowded, for a Tuesday, like who goes to see a flick on a Tuesday night! Boy, we were wrong! They actually have a 6 dollar movie special for cardholders or whatever, so it was pretty crowded.

This napstache is like a cowboystache, maybe "stick em up stache" --I dunno. And despite my best efforts to make the movie some parable about invading foreign lands for their precious resources, I still had to go for what the damn thing actually was; Cowboys and Aliens. I give it a C+. SOMEONE in the special effects department really had a fun time with the Cremora Fireball effect.

The Two Hundred and Fifty Fourth...

Number Two Hundred and Fifty Four:
Home, Dinner, Pizza

We watched the crazy film "Exit through the Gift Shop", a thought provoking documentary that makes you wonder what "art" really is, or how different people interpret what art is. L.A. is fucking crazy...

The Two Hundred and Fifty Third...

Number Two Hundred and Fifty Three:

The Camel, Dinner, Greek pizza

Since becoming a member of the Board of Directors for WRIR 97.3, I have started a nice little tradition before the board meetings; going to the Camel for dinner. The food is tasty, the beer good, and I like sitting at the bar shooting the shit with the bartender. Pretty much being the creature of habit, I get the same thing every time. This time I did change my routine from people watching the Green Drinks Business group that has a function most every time I'm there to putting the last bit of editing red ink I can muster on the Richmond Macabre Anthology. Nearly there, people!

Anyway, the bartender, Georgia, thought the 'stache was funny, but I didn't bother explaining why I did it because one of the people from the Green Drinks Business group was giving a speech at that moment.

The Two Hundred and Twenty Eighth...

Number Two Hundred and Twenty Eight:

Home, Dinner, Pizza

Arianna's for dinner watching the short-lived series Firefly; which internet geekdom has embraced like a lost relative. I never had the chance to see the series until now, Lisa too, and so far we are really enjoying it. The geekdom is merited!

The Two Hundred and Eighth...

Number Two Hundred and Eight:

East end of town is kind of limited in choices, and we at the Bookmobile often get stuck in restaurant ruts. Panera, Padow's, Mexico, Riverbound - are usually the choices on a Monday as such. But today we hit a place that we used to go to pretty often, and is always nice to revisit! Carini does pie well and when I used to live on this side of town, was the go-to pizza joint. Tuesday night large special pizza night explained my 30 pound weight gain! I guess quality beer explains that these days.... heh.

The One Hundred and Ninety Third...

Number One Hundred and Ninety Three:
Home, Dinner, Pizza

Last year, our friend Judd Proctor came to a cookout we had, our first entertaining in the new house. He is on the Bellevue Garden Walk committee and said we should be on it next year. We took him up on it. A lot of what we have in the back yard was thanks to the previous homeowner who took great care and love into making it an awesome oasis. We have maintained stewardship, with our own touches, and shared this great yard for others to view today. At least a hundred and sixty or so people came by our place on the walk and it seemed like everyone was amazed in one way or another about it. We had a great time repeating our stories about the places and things in the yard, then we enjoyed a well earned pizza from Arianna's and some wine on patio afterward!

The One Hundred and Eighty Ninth...

Number One Hundred and Eighty Nine:

Sprout, Dinner, Pizza

Laurie and Jamie had a grand idea before Shoot Fire Yeah! practice tonight, let's go get some free coffee. Rostov's Coffee & Tea were celebrating something and giving away free espresso, cake and chip clips with their logo on it. The Happy Lucky Combo were playing in the corner, always awesome to see Barry Bless and company entertaining.

Lisa and I dig some Rostov's and it was a nice walk up from the Sprout parking lot to get some orange flavored coffee beans; something we used to get more often when we lived in the Fan. Jamie managed to get a few minutes away from his work to walk up with us. Then Laurie and I came back to Sprout to wait for Jamie to get off work, why not a beer or two and some dinner? Okay! Laurie made a duck with her napkin which reminded me to do my daily and viola!

Ducknapstache!

The One Hundred and Seventy Eighth...

Number One Hundred and Seventy Eight:
Arianna's, Dinner, Pizza

It was the first time ever eating at the new one on Lakeside. They have beer and wine now, as well as a ton of wait staff meandering around chatting. Nice people though, friendly whenever we pick up. Our waitress seemed a little cranky or on a short fuse with us, but the giant older man and his wife seated at the booth behind us was getting her life story. Odd how she shared, maybe she knew them. Anyway, the pie was great.

The One Hundred and Fifty Fifth...

Number One Hundred and Fifty Five:

The Crazy Greek, Lunch, Spinach Feta Pizza

Carolyn and I split a small pizza and some salad, good stuff. We also overheard they are opening another location across from Chesterfield Mall. Good for them. Corned beef and cabbage day = geezers galore. A beautiful thing! It was a waitress warp; one of them saw me do this photo and laughed and said it was hilarious. As we were leaving, I also saw our Dot's waitress from the first napstache post having lunch there!

I meant to get a photo from an event that Hope and I went to this evening. Tonight was the Virginia Historical Society's Member Appreciation reception, which meant a lot of geezers in khakis and hair product horking down free buffet food and wine and acting like they are smartest historians ever. We naturally joined them. Hope quote from the evening, "Virginia Historical Society achievement: youngest person in the building!" Always a fun and interesting time at these events, plus we got a look at the new interactive exhibit, "An American Turning Point: the Civil War in Virginia" which was pretty cool. My only complaint amid a lot of the unsung heroes and common folk, dabbled with some well known figures, was that there was no Elizabeth Van Lew! I was really disappointed by that. My friend Cathy who works there explained that she thinks they were trying not to focus too much on the more popular figures, but I still disagree. Van Lew needed something more than an anonymous picture among the other "traitors" area, she needed a blurb. Anyway, a great time, they even gave away free old timey style measuring cups, I grabbed 5! They were begging us to take them!

The One Hundred and Fifty Third...

Number One Hundred and Fifty Three:

Home, Dinner, Pizza

After family errands, we made a quick call to Arianna's Grill for some pizza pick up. 20 minutes. It'll take only 10 to get there. So we swing into the Triangle Park shopping center so I can go into Corks & Kegs and pick up a couple of Great Divide Titan IPA singles and some kooky looking Bourbon Barrel Aged Barley Wine. That kills 5 minutes, followed by a nice leisurely drive down Monument, and we're put right there for some warm pizza pie pick up. FYI, Lakeside Arianna's now serves wine and beer!

The One Hundred and Thirty Sixth...

Number One Hundred and Thirty Six:

Carini Italian Restaurant, Lunch, Sausage & Mushroom Pizza

We were to meet some people from the local Audubon list-serve for some birding adventure at 1 o'clock on the Malvern Hill Battlefield, this pizza place was just on the way. The interior of this place has always felt like you have walked into some serious Italian restaurant kitch, and I have long been a fan of Carini. I used to live on this side of town and they had some crazy 5 dollar (then 10) large cheese pizza special on Mondays, or something. Over years of eating there, I felt, that their pizza started to go the way of the downhill grease slalom, but today's pie was really good. I think it usually depends on the person making it. The crust was a little thicker than the usual style they do, but crisp and cheesy and delicious. Good stuff before the some birding!

The birding turned into more of an amusement of birder types than good bird spotting. The location was great for a lot of varieties; vast open fields, some deciduous woods and just down the hill a nice wetland that sometimes had migrating shorebirds, which was the reason why we were there.

Unfortunately, the organization of the outing was a little haphazard. There were about 8 of us, a nice couple in their late fifties that volunteered to drive people from the parking lot to the spot about 1/4 a mile away. There were a few ladies, I guess these peoples' friends, another man, probably a life long boy scoutish dude in his late 50s and then the pasty "guide"in his thirties. While the people were all very nice, I believe a few were definitely beginners (more so than even me), and the scout guy definitely knew his shit.

After the short van ride, we started along this trail, at a considerable distance to any of the wetlands to see easily with our meager binoculars, yet we stayed at this location a while. It was only when the scout guy forged ahead, with Lisa and I following close behind, starting down the 3/4 mile trail to actually get close, did we start seeing something. This scout guy, started out cranky, and was probably an asshole anyway, but I respected his style and the way he birded, which was similar to how Lisa and I do; just keep walking and find stuff, get to the best viewing destination then maybe sit a while. At one point we waited for everyone to catch up and a swallow flew overhead. One of the ladies said, "Ohhh! What is that? A Swallow?" The "guide", who minimally saw the overhead shadow, dismissed it, saying it was a Robin. Wrong! As we made our way along, finally nearing the levee trail that divided the low water with the higher water, we started to actually see some shorebirds, ducks, and a few other nice waterfowl, with an opportunity to view even more once out on the levee.

The scout guy quickly picked up on the ducks as we were a bit ahead, then the rest of the crew arrived. We told them what they were and where the best spot to view them was. The "guide" then got really excited to see a mated towhee pair in a tree ahead, which made all the other people get really excited as well. Towhees are all well and good, but please, calm down, they're towhees. After too long a moment spent on them, they then directed their attention back to the water, the "guide" telling us not to go further on the levee path for fear of scaring the birds away. We were really doubting that. The scout guy again mentioned the name of the ducks, and after a few befuddled moments among the rest of the crew, they finally said the duck name too! That is when I saw scout guy shake his head in the utter disappointment that he was even here. He, and we, were pretty done with this crew, but I think we really wanted to go over the levee trail, so Lisa and I made one last attempt. The "guide" then quickly said we should really NOT go any further, hinting that we might scare the migrating birds away forever.

(As far as we basically got to the levee)

Wrong. Lisa and I, and I think that scout dude, knew enough about birding that we would not screw it up; maybe he was talking about the rest of the group, still ooo-ing and ahh-ing over the towhees, but it didn't matter by this time. I turned to Lisa and gave her a look, then we both looked up the trail we had just come from and saw scout guy making a bee-line the fuck out of there; back to the parking lot. Screw the van ride back. Lisa asked if we should follow that guy's lead. Yes.

So we followed about a 1/4 mile behind him back up the road, not even bothering to try to wait for the rest of the crew to give us a ride back; it really wasn't that far of a walk back anyway. That dude was outta here, and so were we. It was a great walk back, reminding me of some of the hilly areas in the mountains. As we were nearly back to the battlefield parking lot, the crew in the van pulled along side and asked if we wanted a ride the rest of the way. We politely declined.

So while we didn't really see many great birds, some nice ones like the yellow legged sandpiper, the green winged teal and the ringed neck duck, the far more interesting part of the adventure was the different birders! I don't think we'll be going of this particular guide's trip anytime soon, however, we really enjoyed the area and will definitely go there again.

The One Hundred and Thirty Fourth...

Number One Hundred Thirty Four:

The Camel, Dinner, Greek Pizza

Quick bite and a beer before the Board of Directors meeting for WRIR 97.3. The beer, Bells Two Hearted, the dinner was a really great tasting Greek pizza. Tonight was my vote night. In other words, I was getting voted in (or not) to be on the Board. By unanimous vote, I am now a member of the Board!

The One Hundred and Twenty-Second...

Number One Hundred and Twenty Two:

Home, Dinner, Pizza

After finishing a pretty damn good River City Limits show on WRIR 97.3. I picked up some pizza from Arianna's to have on the couch with Lisa. Wine included! So nice! I think we are gearing up to watch the Disney classic Love Bug. I know! We walked up to our local city library, returning a book and saw it while looking at the DVDs. Haven't seen it since, I don't know, I was eight? Should be interesting.

Pizzastache!

The Ninety-Sixth...

Number Ninety-Six:

Home, Dinner, Pizza

That's right! MORE pizza! We LOVE pizza! We LOVE LOVING pizza! Arianna's Grill is Northside now and we LOVE their pizza! Oh, and what goes well with the 'za? Rockbridge Tuscarora Red wine, of course! This is me sneaking a Valentine's Day smooch from Lisa while we watch some computer program Watson play humans on Jeopardy!

The Ninety-Fifth...

Number Ninety-Five:

Lakeside, Lunch, Pizza & Cake

Birthday celebration at Lisa's brother Brian and sis-in-law Ellen's house in Northside. Lisa's folks there as well. We biked there and a great day for it! Hope joined us a little later after she got off work too. The birthdays were Nora (Lisa's Mom), Brian (her brother) and Zellie (her niece). Pizza delivered from the new place on Lakeside by the Mary Angela's family. Good place and great location, we needed one on this side of town. Anyway, B & E have four kids, three boys and the youngest a girl, and Lisa's Dad, Brian and I had a good old time goofing with the boys in the yard a bit. This picture was taking at the table after a few slices. They have a great map of the world, a great way to eat and learn, so what better a location to take a napstache?

Mapstache!
