The Two Hundred and Seventy Ninth...

Number Two Hundred and Seventy Nine:
Home, Dinner, Pizza

The Lundy-Ryans came over for pizza then we went to Bow-Tie to see a movie. First, we thought the joint would be less crowded, for a Tuesday, like who goes to see a flick on a Tuesday night! Boy, we were wrong! They actually have a 6 dollar movie special for cardholders or whatever, so it was pretty crowded.

This napstache is like a cowboystache, maybe "stick em up stache" --I dunno. And despite my best efforts to make the movie some parable about invading foreign lands for their precious resources, I still had to go for what the damn thing actually was; Cowboys and Aliens. I give it a C+. SOMEONE in the special effects department really had a fun time with the Cremora Fireball effect.

The Two Hundred Twenty First:

Number Two Hundred and Twenty One:

Bow-Tie Cinema, Movie, Popcorn

On this Father's Day, Hope had to work, and she wasn't interested in going to see a movie anyway, so Lisa and I went to see Super 8. A kind of E.T. / Goonies / Stand By Me movie by J.J. Abrams. Not bad, a nice matinee flick that isn't a sequel or franchise like so many movies are that are out right now. Hollywood is a barren wasteland, so I have to choose wisely. The previews were atrocious; Transformers - destroying a city a la 9-11, Zookeeper - man-boy tripe, Captain America - looks absolutely dumb (STOP MAKING SUPER HERO MOVIES!), and the last two I would see. Harry Potter, the last one, finally. And then Cowboys and Aliens, which YES, will most certainly fall in the ridiculous schlock category, but like I said, I think I will have chosen wisely. It IS based on a graphic novel, and it DOES look completely ludicrous and over the top! And, it's not a sequel or franchise! (Yet.) Still, when you combine western with sci-fi it should be interesting, well, unless it goes the way of Wild Wild West. Hmmm, maybe I should rethink things....

Anyway, when we came back home, Hope had left me a card that was great! Nice!

The Eighty-First...

Number Eighty-One:

Dots Back Inn, Lunch, Corned Beef Hash

We went with Michael and Melissa to go see The Breakfast Club at Movieland. Lisa had never seen it before and I was curious to see how it would hold up. I remember that movie during my youth and thought it was okay, not the best John Hughes, kind of pedestrian characterization, very school play-like, but for a young teen, wow. I also remember when I saw certain scenes (Emilio Estevez's getting stoned dancing) and heard some of the dialog ("Hey wastoid, you're not going to blaze up in here!") I thought it was dumb. Still, you think everything is dumb when you are young, right? Seeing it today, those moments are still kind of cheesy, and I still feel the same way about it, but it was a blast to go see it! After hooting it up with several other people who were culting it up on a Sunday morning, the four of us hit Dots for some lunch. Good times!

Clubstache!

The Sixty-Seventh...

Number Sixty-Seven:

Cafe Ole, Lunch, Veggie Burrito

L. needed bagels and so I came up with a cunning plan to do some Carytowning. Elwood Thompson, then lunch at Cafe Ole, then while she did some things at Mongrel and Goodwill, I would hit Plan 9. Came together nicely, it did.

We followed that up with a Bollywood movie playing at Virginia Center Commons called "Yamla Pagla Deewana" starring classic B-wood actor Dharmendra Singh Deol (Sholay as well as tons more) and two of his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. L. and I started off being the only two in the theater, then a bunch of people came in, all appeared to be Indian. This only added to the joy of watching this film because they were laughing at parts that I was culturally ignorant of, but could understand through their laughter the gist of it. The film itself was really fun, nearing three hours, as any good Bollyfilm should, and having action, drama and comedy -an afternoon well spent with a throwback screwball type comedy.

Can I call this one a Bollystache?

The Forty-Ninth...

Number Forty-Nine:

Virginia Center Commons Regal Theaters, Popcorn, Movie

After trying to help G. at work get her Prius started (we never did and she had to get a tow), I got home and was spent, throat still blah (maybe a humidifier will help), but not nearly as sick. H. was chilling on the couch and I started to look at Fandango for whimsy.

"Hey H., you wanna go see True Grit?" I threw it out there, not expecting much from the teen.

"Sure!"

What? Really? Getting her to the movies, let alone a western remake? Wow! OKAY!
It is a Coen Brothers film, so at least the dialog would be clever and the cinematography by Roger Deakins is always a joy; I knew it would be entertaining.

Both of us enjoyed it a lot. Some fine acting and just a great western. Not nearly as great as Unforgiven, but more approachable and not as complicated a tale. H. even said she liked it better than the last Harry Potter movie! Wow!

Got this Stache sitting in the Virginia Center Commons theater, which any RVA moviegoer knows these days, is the new crappy movie theater in town. Well, maybe in a tie with West Tower. Not a terrible theater, just the people working there would rather dance to themselves singing shitty 90s dance music than oh say, wipe a counter of sticky fluid or random popcorn sog. I'm pretty good in any theater until people start being assclowns on their cells or talking or whatever; we lucked out today though, everyone was well behaved. But it was still no Bowtie!
