The Three Hundred and Sixty First...

Number Three Hundred and Sixty One:

Cafe Ole, Lunch, Veggie Burrito

We went to Maymont today, beautiful weather for it. We enter via the house approach and stayed mostly on that side. The koi were frenzied when some ding dong dad started feeding them Apple Jacks. Across the way on the concrete lily pads, a couple of dudes were playing "photographer" with some cute gal in a mini-skirt who had to get up off the concrete chill to let people and their kids pass by every once and a while.

Can you spot the Apple Jack among the koi?

That place is awesome, the Japanese maples were turning, the cypress were delightfully fragrant and Lisa and I knew just where to be to avoid any people hassles. Afterward it was off to Carytown for some lunch, booze and books!

T-minus 4.

The One Hundred and Seventy First...

Number One Hundred and Seventy One:
WRIR 97.3 studios, Lunch, Cafe Ole, Burrito

Coming into the WRIR 97.3 studios to do my mic managing shift for the Spring Fund Drive a few minutes early not only meant getting my stuff together and prepping, but also enjoying one of the many fine meals offered at the station over the course of the Drive. This time it was Cafe Ole, burritos and chips available. Yum.

Now is the time. If you have ever given a shit about the First Amendment and the very idea of independent radio, the kind of radio you USED to enjoy (if you are old enough) or STILL enjoy (because you are young enough), NOW is the time to donate to one of the most creative, energetic, knowledgeable and AWESOME group of volunteers to ever invest their time in something great. Richmond Independent Radio can be heard across the world via the internet stream too.

Richmond has been a great musical town for as long as I can remember, and this radio station reflects this. Not only do we have people from the older scene, but new people as well. And it is not just about music, news and talk kicks much ass as well. So, keep this thing rolling and DONATE!

I managed this 'stache during my shift on the microphone during the 80s show hosted by Bil L. and P-Swann. Solid!

The One Hundred and Fourteenth...

Number One Hundred and Fourteen:

Cafe Ole, Lunch, Veggie Burrito

Today is my birthday, so I took the day off. Lisa and I went into Carytown for lunch and record shopping. Picked up some goodies at Plan 9, mainly some singles and a sweet copy of Cold Blood's "Thriller". After a grocery store date, which Lisa hates and I don't mind so much, we got home and lo and behold my ebay win of the single "Pig Snoots" by Natural Bridge Bunch (Andre Williams) arrived!

Hell yeah! Original French import version on Atco! Nice gift to myself! Great, crazy brain worm of a song too! Sweet! This little stache has an element of either Dali or Clouseau, you can decide.

The Sixty-Seventh...

Number Sixty-Seven:

Cafe Ole, Lunch, Veggie Burrito

L. needed bagels and so I came up with a cunning plan to do some Carytowning. Elwood Thompson, then lunch at Cafe Ole, then while she did some things at Mongrel and Goodwill, I would hit Plan 9. Came together nicely, it did.

We followed that up with a Bollywood movie playing at Virginia Center Commons called "Yamla Pagla Deewana" starring classic B-wood actor Dharmendra Singh Deol (Sholay as well as tons more) and two of his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. L. and I started off being the only two in the theater, then a bunch of people came in, all appeared to be Indian. This only added to the joy of watching this film because they were laughing at parts that I was culturally ignorant of, but could understand through their laughter the gist of it. The film itself was really fun, nearing three hours, as any good Bollyfilm should, and having action, drama and comedy -an afternoon well spent with a throwback screwball type comedy.

Can I call this one a Bollystache?

Fifty...

Number Fifty:

Cafe Ole (Carytown), Lunch, Spinach Burrito

What once was probably a gas station, then a laundry mat, then briefly Ben & Jerry's now has a local place giving it a try; Cafe Ole. Their first location being downtown and the one that I used to meet fellow ThroTTle friends on my lunch hour when I worked at VCU. I was pretty excited to see this endeavor in Carytown, and I think a lot of people are happy to see it there too.

I met my pal M. for delicious burritos and Carytown havoc. Hitting the great places like Chop Suey, RCC, and Plan 9 where we both scored some cool records. Then Mongrel and some beers at New York Deli. I do missed the old NY Deli, the newer one is clearly marketed to the bar crowd and it does have a decent tap selection, but there was something charming about the old Jewish Deli that made great breakfast and sandwiches and had greater vibe. This one feels kind of like any other place with a lady two stools over from us who looked like she just came from the tanning salon and had a big fashionable purse. What the hell does someone with a purse that big KEEP in the damn thing? We speculated; nightie, lotions, poodles --unfathomable. Anyway, a great afternoon!
